Wet Eyes Are Happy Eyes

Tears are your eye’s natural protection. The natural moisture layer nourishes the eye, washing away dust and microorganisms when you blink. But when this protective layer dries out, your eyes can feel gritty, scratchy, and sensitive to light. Dry eye can also cause blurry vision, lead to frequent eye infections, and cornea scarring that could permanently impair your vision.

If you’re experiencing dry eye symptoms, we can help.

With a personalized treatment plan, we can help improve your comfort and protect your eye health. We’ll perform a series of tests to determine if you have dry eyes and then tailor a treatment plan specifically for you.

What Is Dry Eye?

Dry is a complex, chronic condition caused by inadequate tear volume (aqueous deficient dry eye) or poor tear quality (evaporative dry eye).

Our eyes depend on a healthy tear film to stay lubricated and smooth (allowing light to pass through evenly for clear vision). When we aren’t able to produce enough tears or tears evaporate too quickly, our eyes become dry and irritated.

Common Dry Eye Symptoms

Dry eye can cause:

  • Blurry vision
  • Redness
  • Stinging or scratching
  • Foreign body sensation
  • Light sensitivity
  • Watery eyes

We Evaluate Tear Quality to Tailor Treatment

Prior to making any treatment recommendations, we complete a thorough eye exam to assess the health of your eyes and the quality of your tear film (the eye’s natural moisture layer).

During this examination, we carefully evaluate various aspects of your tear film, including mucus, water, and oil levels, which are essential tear components. We’ll also consider your eye health history, family health history, and lifestyle to determine the root cause of your symptoms.

How Can We Help Treat Dry Eye?

Dry eye can be effectively managed through a variety of methods, combining in-office and home therapies. The goal of dry eye treatment is to restore or maintain a healthy level of tears.

Various lifestyle factors, from digital screens to air conditioning, and even certain medical conditions, like diabetic eye disease or meibomian gland dysfunction, can contribute to your dry eye symptoms. If left untreated, dry eye can lead to more serious problems, such as frequent eye infections or corneal damage.

We provide tailored treatment plans that address the factors specific to your individual eye health and lifestyle. Our practice uses a range of comprehensive strategies to help patients alleviate the discomfort caused by dry eyes, prioritizing your ocular well-being.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy

Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy uses precise pulses of light to reduce inflammation, improve tear break-up time, and increase meibomian gland function.

The meibomian glands, located along the edge of the eyelids, produce natural oils that keep tears from evaporating too quickly. When these glands become clogged, tears become less effective at moisturizing the eyes. The heat generated from IPL therapy melts and unclogs the natural oils in these glands, leading to longer-lasting moisture and improved tear quality. Learn more about OptiLight by Lumenis.

Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT)

The equinox low-level light therapy (LLLT) device uses specially designed LED lights to gently apply localized heat to the facial area. The noninvasive treatment gently warms the meibomian glands, which are located along the edges of the eyelids. The heat helps control inflammation to unclog the glands, releasing oils needed to keep the eye’s surface healthy. These natural oils (meibum) are an essential component of tears necessary to help moisture last longer.

You can experience a complete treatment session in as little as 15 minutes, with no downtime required.
